Audio-Technica ATH-W5000: price in 2026 and where to find it cheaper

The Audio-Technica ATH-W5000 is discontinued, and B&H lists it as no longer available, so in October 2026 it can only be bought used. Its closest current relative, the ebony ATH-AWKT, lists at $1,999, while the maple ATH-WP900 is the lower-cost wooden model at $699.

Is the ATH-W5000 still made?

No. Audio-Technica's US product page for the ATH-W5000 carries a Discontinued label, and the European page shows the same label with a last list price of €1,500 and the words Out of Stock. B&H Photo's search page states that the ATH-W5000 is no longer available and offers only accessories for it. That was the status at the time of checking, Oct 18, 2026.

The model is old. Japanese price site Kakaku.com gives its release date as December 2, 2005, so it had a long run before Audio-Technica replaced it. Any W5000 you find in 2026 is either used or old stock from a third-party seller, and the price depends on condition rather than on a list price.

What the ATH-W5000 is, from the spec sheet

The W5000 is a closed-back dynamic headphone with ebony wood housings, built for home listening. The figures below come from Audio-Technica's own specification table.

SpecATH-W5000
TypeClosed-back dynamic, Double Air Damping System
Driver53 mm, neodymium magnet, Permendur magnetic circuit
Frequency response5 to 45,000 Hz
Impedance40 ohms
Sensitivity102 dB/mW
Weight340 g without the cord
Cable3.0 m, fixed, dual-sided
Plug6.3 mm (1/4 inch) gold-plated
In the boxHard case and cable storage bag

Two details matter for a buyer in 2026. The cable is not detachable, so a damaged cable means a repair rather than a swap. And the large 6.3 mm plug needs an adapter for a phone or laptop jack. The 40-ohm impedance and 102 dB/mW sensitivity are moderate figures on paper, so the W5000 does not need an unusually powerful amplifier, but it was clearly designed with home equipment in mind.

What an ATH-W5000 costs in 2026

There is no current new price because the headphone is no longer sold by Audio-Technica. These are the figures that could be confirmed in October 2026:

WherePrice seenNote
Audio-Technica Europe€1,500Last list price, shown as discontinued and out of stock
Reverb (US)$300 askingOne used listing on Oct 18, 2026, marked Used, Good, with case
e-earphone (Japan)About ¥48,000 to ¥62,000Used units, depending on condition grade
B&H PhotoNot soldListed as no longer available

Older US reviews quoted prices of roughly $1,000 to $1,700 while the W5000 was still in shops. Used prices now sit well below that, but they swing widely with the condition of the pads and the wood. A single Reverb listing is not a market price, so compare several listings on Reverb and eBay before you buy.

Fact board of ATH-W5000 prices: last EU list price 1,500 euros, one used US Reverb listing at $300, used in Japan about 48,000 to 62,000 yen, not sold at B&H.

Buying a used W5000: what to check

Because every W5000 on sale now is second-hand, the checks below protect you more than any discount does.

  • Photos of the housings. Ask for close photos of the ebony cups. Cracks or deep scratches in the wood are hard to fix.
  • Ear pads. The pads are leather-covered. Worn or flaking pads mean you should budget for replacements, and genuine W5000 pads may be hard to find now that the model is discontinued.
  • The fixed cable. Ask whether both channels play cleanly when the cable is moved. A cable fault is the most common problem on older headphones with a fixed cord.
  • Case and paperwork. The original hard case was part of the package. A listing with the case and box is easier to resell later.
  • Return terms. Reverb and eBay sellers set their own return windows. Read them before paying, and pay through the platform so its buyer protection applies.

Be careful with listings that call a W5000 new and sealed at a low price. After this many years out of production, a new unit would be rare.

Current Audio-Technica wooden headphones instead

If you want the same idea in a product that is still made, Audio-Technica sells several wooden closed-back models. All are hand-assembled in Tokyo, according to the brand. Prices below are Audio-Technica US list prices on Oct 18, 2026.

ModelHousing woodCablesUS list price
ATH-WP900Flame mapleTwo detachable 1.2 m cables, 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm balanced$699
ATH-AWASAsada Zakura (Japanese cherry)Two detachable 3.0 m cables, 6.3 mm and 4-pin XLR balanced$1,499
ATH-AWKTKokutan (striped ebony)Two detachable 3.0 m cables, 6.3 mm and 4-pin XLR balanced$1,999

The ATH-AWKT is the closest relative. It uses striped ebony like the W5000, 53 mm drivers with a Permendur magnetic circuit and the same Double Air Damping System, and it adds detachable cables. The ATH-WP900 is the budget route into the wooden line and is the only one of the three built for portable use. Audio-Technica's higher-priced ATH-L5000 is also marked discontinued on the US site, so it is not an option for new buyers either.

Bar chart of US list prices for current Audio-Technica wooden headphones: ATH-WP900 $699, ATH-AWAS $1,499 and ATH-AWKT $1,999.

Where to pay less: B&H, Amazon and the used market

B&H Photo. At the time of checking, B&H listed the ATH-AWKT at $1,999 and the ATH-WP900 at $699, the same as Audio-Technica's list prices. The savings at B&H come from its programs rather than a lower sticker. The B&H Payboo card pays back the sales tax on qualifying orders shipped to states where B&H collects tax, which is worth well over $100 on a $1,999 headphone in many states. B&H also says it may refund the difference if the price drops during the return window, and it may match a lower price from a competitor on an identical in-stock item. PickedBox keeps the current offers on its B&H Photo coupon page.

Amazon. Amazon's pages could not be loaded for this guide, so no Amazon price is quoted here. Older W5000 listings on Amazon come from third-party sellers, which means you should check who the seller is and what return terms apply. Amazon Resale sometimes has open-box headphones at lower prices. See the Amazon coupon page for current Prime and student offers.

Audio-Technica direct. The brand's US store offers monthly payments through Affirm on its wooden models. That spreads the cost but does not lower it.

Timing. Black Friday week in November is the most likely time to see a lower price on current wooden models. Prices on discontinued models do not follow a sales calendar.

Who it is for

A used ATH-W5000 makes sense for a collector who wants this specific ebony model and accepts the risks of a fixed cable and ageing pads. For someone who simply wants an Audio-Technica wooden closed-back headphone with a warranty, the ATH-AWKT is the current ebony model and the ATH-WP900 is the lower-cost option. Listen to any of them in a store or buy from a seller with a clear return policy before committing, since fit and sound preferences are personal.

How we checked this

On Oct 18, 2026, PickedBox loaded Audio-Technica's US and European product pages for the ATH-W5000, ATH-WP900, ATH-AWAS, ATH-AWKT and ATH-L5000 through a text reader, searched B&H Photo for each model and searched Reverb for used listings. Amazon and eBay pages blocked automated access, so no price from them is quoted. The Japanese used price range and the release date come from search results for e-earphone and Kakaku.com. No headphones were bought or used for this guide.
