Protein and supplements on a budget: what to buy and where it costs less

The cheapest protein powder is the one with the lowest price per serving or per pound, not the lowest tub price, and in October 2026 that ranged from about $1.15 to $2.90 a serving across Bodybuilding.com and GNC. Store brands, larger sizes and subscription discounts usually lower the cost, but each has exceptions worth checking.

Compare protein powder by price per serving, not tub price

Protein tubs come in sizes from 12 servings to 10 pounds, and scoop sizes differ by brand. A low sticker price often just means a small tub. Two numbers make products comparable:

  • Price per serving: the price divided by the servings listed on the label. GNC prints this on its product pages; most stores do not.
  • Price per gram of protein: price per serving divided by grams of protein per serving. This matters when one scoop has 22 g and another 27 g.

An example from the GNC Pro Performance Whey 2.0 page in October 2026: the 25-serving tub cost $54.99, which GNC shows as $2.20 a serving. The label lists 25 g of protein per 30 g scoop, so the cost works out to about 8.8 cents per gram of protein. Run the same math on any tub you consider, using the sale price you would actually pay.

What protein powder cost in October 2026

These are list and sale prices read from store pages between Oct 14 and Oct 18, 2026. Prices change often, and flavors of the same product can be priced differently.

Product and sizePrice seenCost
Bodybuilding.com Signature Whey, 30 servings (Vanilla Cream)$34.49, list $49.99$1.15 a serving on sale, $1.67 at list
Bodybuilding.com Signature Isolate, 24 servings$34.49, list $49.99$1.44 a serving
Bodybuilding.com Signature Whey, 5 lb$112.49, list $124.99$22.50 a pound
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey at Bodybuilding.com, 2 / 5 / 10 lb$44.99 / $84.99 / $157.99$22.50 / $17.00 / $15.80 a pound
GNC Pro Performance Whey 2.0, 12 / 25 servings$34.99 / $54.99$2.92 / $2.20 a serving

Warehouse clubs often undercut these. A September 2026 Slickdeals thread cited Costco's online price for a 5.64 lb bag of Gold Standard at about $80, roughly $14 a pound; that figure comes from a shopper comment, not from Costco.

Bar chart of protein powder cost per serving: Signature Whey $1.15 on sale and $1.67 at list, Signature Isolate $1.44, GNC Pro Performance $2.20 and $2.92.

When buying in bulk saves money, and when it does not

Larger sizes usually cost less per unit. In the table, Gold Standard drops from $22.50 a pound in the 2 lb tub to $15.80 in the 10 lb bag at the same store. But the rule has exceptions, so check each time:

  • Sale timing beats size. The 30-serving Signature Whey on sale at $1.15 a serving was a better deal than paying list for many larger tubs.
  • Bigger is not always cheaper. Bodybuilding.com Signature Creatine Monohydrate was $23.99 for 90 servings (about 27 cents a serving) and $53.99 for 180 servings (30 cents), so two small tubs cost less than one large one.
  • Store brand is not always cheapest. The 5 lb Signature Whey worked out to $22.50 a pound, while the 5 lb Gold Standard at the same store was $17.00.

Bulk only saves money if you finish it before the best-by date and like the flavor. Return windows are short for opened food products: Bodybuilding.com accepts refund requests within 7 days of delivery for unopened items only, and Myprotein takes returns within 30 days if seals are intact. Try a small size of a new flavor before buying 5 or 10 pounds.

Store brands and what the label tells you

Most large sellers have a house brand priced below the big names: Signature at Bodybuilding.com, Pro Performance at GNC, Impact Whey at Myprotein and California Gold Nutrition at iHerb. The labels give the facts you need to compare them:

  • The Myprotein Impact Whey page lists 22 g of protein per serving.
  • The iHerb listing for California Gold Nutrition Sport Whey Protein Isolate, 5 lb, lists 27 g of protein per 31 g scoop and 73 servings.
  • The Bodybuilding.com page for the 5 lb Signature Whey describes about 25 g per serving from a blend of whey concentrate, isolate and hydrolyzed whey.

Isolates usually cost more per serving than concentrate blends, and the label shows which one you are buying. Dietary supplements, protein powders included, are not approved by the FDA before they are sold. If that matters to you, look for third-party seals such as NSF Certified for Sport on the label. How much protein a person needs depends on body size, diet and health, so a doctor or registered dietitian is the right person to ask before adding supplements.

A simple plan for a cheaper protein routine

Pick one or two basics you actually use, such as a whey or plant protein and creatine monohydrate, rather than a cart of extras. Many whey labels already list naturally occurring BCAAs; the Gold Standard page lists 5.5 g per serving, for example, so a separate BCAA product adds cost without changing what the whey label lists. Work out the price per serving for two or three options, buy the size you will finish, and set up a subscription only on the product you reorder every month. Food still covers most protein for most people, and powder is a convenience, not a requirement.

How we checked this

Between Oct 14 and Oct 18, 2026, PickedBox read product prices and labels on shop.bodybuilding.com (product listing data for Signature, Optimum Nutrition and creatine products), the GNC Pro Performance Whey 2.0 page, the Myprotein Impact Whey page and the iHerb California Gold Nutrition listing, plus Bodybuilding.com's rewards, membership, shipping and refund pages. Myprotein and iHerb prices did not load in a readable form, so only label data is given for them. The Costco figure comes from a shopper comment on Slickdeals. Per-serving and per-pound costs are simple division of the listed price. Nothing in this guide reflects a purchase or use by PickedBox.
