Watching YouTube offline legally: Premium prices, student and family plans

The legal way to watch YouTube offline is the Download button that comes with YouTube Premium or Premium Lite. In October 2026, Premium costs $15.99 a month in the US, the family plan $26.99 for up to six people, and student and Lite plans $8.99 each.

YouTube does not offer a free download button for other people's videos. Its Terms of Service say you may not download content unless YouTube clearly shows a download button or link for it, or the copyright holder gives permission. Third-party download sites work around that rule, which is why this guide does not link to any of them.

The official route is a paid plan. With YouTube Premium or Premium Lite, a Download button appears under eligible videos in the YouTube app and on youtube.com. According to YouTube Help, downloads resume on their own if the connection drops, and download quality can be set in Settings.

There is one free exception. If the video is yours, YouTube Studio lets you download your own uploads from the Content page. That covers the most common reason people looked for a downloader in the first place: recovering an old video after the original file was lost.

YouTube Premium price in October 2026

YouTube raised US prices on April 10, 2026. New members paid the new rates right away, and existing members moved over on their June billing date, according to 9to5Google. At the time of checking (October 2026), the US prices were:

PlanPriceBefore April 2026
Premium (individual)$15.99 a month$13.99
Premium (individual, annual)$159.99 a year$139.99
Premium family$26.99 a month$22.99
Premium student$8.99 a month$7.99
Premium Lite$8.99 a month$7.99
YouTube Music Premium$11.99 a month$10.99

The annual plan works out to just over $13 a month, about 15% less than paying monthly. Third-party coverage also reports a higher price when Premium is bought inside the iPhone app, so signing up on youtube.com is the safer way to pay the listed rate. YouTube's own Premium page shows the price for your account before checkout.

Bar chart of US YouTube monthly plan prices: Premium Lite $8.99, Premium student $8.99, Music Premium $11.99, Premium individual $15.99, Premium family $26.99.

Premium Lite: offline viewing for most videos at a lower price

Premium Lite started as an ad-free option without downloads. On Feb 24, 2026, the YouTube blog announced that Lite would add background play and downloads for most videos.

The catch is music. YouTube Help states that Lite's downloads and background play do not cover Shorts or music content, including official music videos, Art Tracks, children's songs and user videos that use music from YouTube's partners, such as covers or a vlog with a popular song in the background. Lite also does not include YouTube Music Premium.

For someone who mostly watches tutorials, podcasts, news or long videos on a commute, Lite at $8.99 covers offline viewing for about $7 a month less than full Premium. For anyone who downloads music, full Premium is the plan that covers it.

Student and family plans: who qualifies

Student plan. According to YouTube Help, you must be enrolled at a higher education institution approved by SheerID and verified as a student through SheerID. Eligible students can keep the plan for up to four consecutive years and must re-verify every year. Anyone already on a paid YouTube plan has to cancel it before switching to the student plan.

Family plan. The family plan help page says the family manager can share the membership with up to five other people who live at the same residential address. YouTube checks this electronically every 30 days. Split six ways, $26.99 comes to about $4.50 per person per month, the lowest per-person cost of any plan. Only the family manager can buy the plan or change members, and age rules apply to members under 18.

How the free trial works and how to avoid a surprise charge

YouTube's trials page lists the main rules:

  • Introductory trials are for first-time members, or for people who canceled Premium, Music Premium or Premium Lite at least six months earlier.
  • Only one trial is allowed per 12-month period, and one trial per payment method.
  • Trial length varies. YouTube sometimes runs extended trials for new members or for people who canceled at least three years ago.
  • When the trial ends, the membership renews automatically at the current price unless you cancel first. If you cancel during the trial, access lasts until the trial period ends.

A simple habit avoids a charge you did not plan for: set a calendar reminder two days before the trial ends. YouTube also lets members pause Premium for up to six months from the memberships page, which can be cheaper than canceling and losing a future trial.

How long downloads last and what happens when you travel

  • 29 days offline. YouTube Help states that downloaded videos play offline for up to 29 days. After that, the device must reconnect so the app can check whether each video is still available. Videos that were removed from YouTube disappear on the next sync.
  • Travel abroad. According to YouTube's location rules, if you travel to a country where Premium or Lite is not offered, the membership benefits stop working there, but videos downloaded before the trip stay available offline for 30 days.
  • Downloads are not files you own. Downloads play inside the YouTube app. They are not saved as video files you can copy, edit or keep after the membership ends.
Download rules: videos play offline up to 29 days, stay 30 days in a country without Premium, and removed videos disappear on the next sync.

Which plan costs the least for your situation

A college student should check the student plan first, at $8.99 with full Premium features. A household with three or more viewers will usually pay least per person on the family plan. A single viewer who skips music can save with Lite, and a single viewer who wants everything pays least with the annual Premium plan. How we checked this

In October 2026, PickedBox read YouTube Help pages on downloads, Premium Lite, student plans, family plans, trials and location rules, plus the YouTube blog post on Premium Lite. youtube.com could not be loaded directly, so US prices come from 9to5Google and Ubergizmo coverage of the April 2026 increase. No plans were bought for this guide.
