Best cast iron skillets in 2026: Lodge and four others, by price

The five skillets and their prices at a glance

Cast iron splits into two price groups. Lodge and Victoria sell sand-cast pans with a pebbly surface for under $40. Stargazer, Field and Smithey machine or polish the cooking surface and sell direct for $175 or more. Prices below were seen on each brand's own site on Oct 18, 2026, unless marked.

The old version of this list, from 2020, included Henley Kitchen and Elysian Kitchen pans. Those were small Amazon-only brands, and they have been replaced here by companies that publish their own prices, sizes and warranty terms.

Lodge Classic: the $30 benchmark

Lodge's Classic Cast Iron Skillet is the pan most others are measured against. Lodge has made cast iron in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, since the 1890s, and it sells the classic skillet in nine sizes. On Oct 18, 2026, lodgecastiron.com showed these prices:

• 10.25 in: $24.90, list $29.95
• 12 in: $29.90, list $36.95
• 13.25 in: $39.90, list $49.95
• 15 in: $49.90, list $59.95
• Small sizes from 3.5 in to 9 in: $12.95 to $24.95

Lodge describes the skillet as naturally seasoned at the foundry, nontoxic and made without PFAS. The surface is rougher than the machined pans further down this list, which is the main trade-off at this price. The pan is also heavy, and the short handle gets hot, so a handle cover or a towel is part of normal use.

On Amazon, a price tracker showed the 12-inch skillet at $34.90 on Jun 27, 2026, with a recorded low of $23.99. A Slickdeals post on Jun 28, 2026 reported it at $24.88, and $22.39 after a clip-on coupon on the product page. If the price is near $35, the Lodge site was cheaper at the time of checking.

Lodge also sells the Blacklock line, a lighter, triple-seasoned skillet. The 12-inch Blacklock was $80 on lodgecastiron.com, which sits between the classic pan and the premium brands.

Who it is for: first-time cast iron buyers, campers and anyone who wants one pan for searing, baking cornbread and roasting without spending much.

Victoria: a slightly smoother pan for under $40

Victoria is a family-owned company in Medellin, Colombia, founded in 1939, according to its own site. Its 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet was $37.49 on victoriacookware.com on Oct 18, 2026. The 10-inch skillet was listed at $39.99 and the 8-inch at $29.49, so the 12-inch was the better value per inch when checked.

Victoria says the pan is seasoned with non-GMO, kosher-certified flaxseed oil and has no synthetic coating, PTFE or PFOA. The listing describes an extra-thick rim meant to reduce warping, a deeper body than a basic skillet, two pour spouts and a long curved handle. The longer handle is the main design difference from Lodge, and it gives more leverage when lifting a full pan.

Victoria also sells a Signature Classic line with a leather handle, priced at $145 for the 12-inch on its site. That is a different product from the standard skillet, so check the listing name before buying on any retail site.

Who it is for: buyers who want a budget pan with a longer handle and pour spouts, and who are fine with a sand-cast surface.

Stargazer: the lowest-priced machined skillet on this list

The Stargazer 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet was $175 on stargazercastiron.com on Oct 18, 2026, the same price seasoned or bare. Stargazer says the size is similar to a vintage No. 10 skillet and fits three or four steaks or cutlets.

Stargazer's site advertises free returns, so a buyer can send the skillet back at the company's cost, and a lifetime warranty. Its FAQ says the warranty does not cover damage from the dishwasher. The site also lists a military discount. Stargazer sells a 10.5-inch skillet, a 13.5-inch braiser and matching lids as well.

The bare option is for people who want to season the pan themselves from raw iron. Most buyers will want the seasoned version, since it costs the same.

Who it is for: cooks who want a smooth cooking surface and a long warranty but want to stay under $200.

Field Company and Smithey: lighter or polished, at $180 to $220

Field Company No.10

The Field No.10 measures 11 5/8 inches and was $215 on fieldcompany.com on Oct 18, 2026. Field's pitch is weight. The company says it studied vintage pans and designs its skillets with thinner sidewalls and a balanced handle so they are easier to lift than modern sand-cast pans. The cooking surface is polished and comes pre-seasoned. The listing says the pans are made in the USA with no synthetic coatings.

Field's site footer lists a lifetime warranty and a 45-day cast iron trial, and it offers 10% off a first order to people who sign up for its email list.

Smithey No. 12

The Smithey No. 12 was $220 on smithey.com, and the smaller No. 10 was $180. Smithey's specs for the No. 12: 12 in across the top, a 10.5 in cooking surface, 2 in deep, 18.1 in from handle to handle and about 8 lbs. It has a satin-smooth polished interior, pour spouts and hanging holes on both sides, and Smithey says it is made in the US.

Smithey is the heaviest pan in the premium group by its own figures, so it suits stovetop and oven cooking more than one-handed flipping.

Who they are for: Field suits cooks who find standard cast iron too heavy. Smithey suits buyers who want a polished, family-size pan they plan to keep for decades.

What the extra $150 buys, and what it does not

All five pans are cast iron and all are sold pre-seasoned. The extra money for Stargazer, Field or Smithey goes to three things the brands themselves name: a machined or polished cooking surface, lighter or better balanced designs, and longer warranties or trial periods. Food releases more easily from a smooth surface while the seasoning is new. A rougher Lodge surface fills in as layers of seasoning build up with use, which is why many cooks never upgrade.

Care is the same for all of them, based on the brands' care pages. Hand wash, dry the pan right away, and wipe on a thin layer of oil before storing. Keep cast iron out of the dishwasher, which can strip seasoning and, for Stargazer, falls outside the warranty. Do not use cast iron in a microwave.

Size matters more than brand for most kitchens. A 10 to 10.25 in pan handles two or three servings. A 12 in pan is the common choice for a family of four, and Smithey describes its No. 12 that way. Pans larger than 13 in get heavy fast and may not fit a standard burner evenly.

Where to buy cast iron for less

Lodge is the only brand on this list that is widely stocked by big retailers. Amazon, Walmart and Target all carry Lodge skillets, and prices move often. A few rules from the October 2026 check:

• Compare the Amazon price with lodgecastiron.com before buying. In October 2026 Lodge's own site was selling the 12-inch for $29.90, below the June Amazon price of $34.90.
• On Amazon, look for a clip-on coupon on the product page. Amazon rarely runs sitewide codes; most savings show up as a clipped coupon or a lower listed price.
• Prime members get free shipping on eligible items. Prime costs $14.99 a month, Prime for Young Adults is $7.49 a month for ages 18-24 and students, and Prime Access is $6.99 a month for eligible assistance recipients.
• Prime Big Deal Days ran October 6-7, 2026. The next large Amazon event is Black Friday week, which ran from November 20 to Cyber Monday, December 1, in 2025.
• Most items can be returned to Amazon within 30 days of delivery in original or unused condition, which is useful if a pan arrives cracked or warped.
• Check that a listing is sold by Amazon or the brand. Walmart search results in 2026 mixed the standard Lodge skillet with special editions and multi-pack cases at much higher prices.

Stargazer, Field and Smithey sell mainly from their own sites, where their trial, return and warranty terms apply. Field's email sign-up offer is the only standing first-order discount seen on those three sites.
