Definitive Technology ProSub 800: 2026 price and where to buy

The Definitive Technology ProSub 800 is no longer part of the brand's lineup, and Crutchfield lists it as no longer available, so most units left are used, refurbished or old stock. Definitive's current 8-inch model is the Descend DN8, listed at $479 on sale against a $599 regular price in October 2026.

What the ProSub 800 is

The ProSub 800 is a compact powered subwoofer from Definitive Technology, sold for years as a partner for the brand's ProMonitor and ProCinema satellite speakers. The "120V" in many listings simply marks the North American version, built for standard US household power.

Its design pairs a front-firing 8-inch woofer with an 8-inch passive bass radiator on the bottom of the cabinet. The radiator has no motor of its own. It moves with the air pressure inside the box, which adds output without a port. Crutchfield's product description says the combined radiating area is 27% greater than a single 10-inch woofer.

It was sold in black, and the most common pairing was the ProCinema 800 home theater package, which bundled this sub with small satellite speakers.

ProSub 800 specifications

The figures below come from the manufacturer's published specs as repeated on retailer pages. They are the numbers to compare when you look at a used unit.

The LFE input is the one to use with a modern AV receiver. The binding posts let the sub connect to an older stereo amplifier that has no subwoofer output.

Is the ProSub 800 still sold

At the time of checking (Oct 18, 2026), the subwoofer page on definitivetechnology.com listed only four models, all from the Descend series: DN8, DN10, DN12 and DN15. A search of the site for ProSub returned no ProSub product, and the old ProSub 800 product address returns a not found page.

Crutchfield's ProSub 800 page is still online for reference but marks the sub as no longer available. Best Buy still shows customer reviews for the model, but stock could not be confirmed. Definitive has not published a discontinuation date, so the plain reading is that the ProSub 800 has left the lineup and the units on sale now are leftovers, refurbished stock or used.

What a ProSub 800 costs in 2026

Prices seen in October 2026 search results fall into three groups:

  • Old new stock. One reseller listing showed $299.98, marked down from $399.98. Its stock status was not shown, so treat that as a reference point rather than a live offer.
  • Refurbished. A refurbished listing on Spencertified showed $239.99 against a $319.99 original price, marked sold out.
  • Used. eBay listings ranged from about $150 for a unit described as in great condition down to roughly $43 for one sold for parts or repair.

Because these are single listings, prices move quickly. A used sub in working order for well under $200 is in line with what sellers were asking.

Bar chart of ProSub 800 listings: used for parts about $43, used in great condition about $150, refurbished $239.99, old new stock $299.98.

What to check on a used ProSub 800

A subwoofer amplifier is the part most likely to fail with age, and the original warranty no longer helps a second owner. Before paying, ask the seller for these:

  • A short video of the sub playing a low bass track, with the red rear LED lighting when signal arrives.
  • Confirmation that it turns itself on and off with signal as designed.
  • No buzzing or hum with the volume up and no signal playing.
  • A look at the passive radiator on the bottom for tears or a detached surround.
  • The US 120V version if you live in the US. A 230V export unit will not run correctly on a US outlet.

Shipping a 26-pound sub is costly, so local pickup often makes a used deal worth it. Factor shipping into any online price.

The Descend DN8 as the current alternative

The closest current model from the same brand is the Descend DN8. It keeps an 8-inch woofer but adds two passive radiators, which Definitive calls 3XR Architecture, and uses a Class D amplifier. Definitive's page rates its low end as low as 35 Hz (+/- 3 dB). The ProSub 800's 20 Hz figure was published without a tolerance, so the two numbers are not directly comparable.

On Oct 18, 2026, definitivetechnology.com listed the DN8 at $479 on sale against a $599 regular price. Walmart's marketplace showed $599 in a 2026 snapshot. Definitive's warranty page lists 5 years on drivers and 3 years on amplifiers, and its return policy allows returns within 30 days of purchase on the brand's own site.

The larger Descend models were listed at $719 (DN10), $1,119 (DN12) and $1,599 (DN15) on sale, which puts them in a different budget.

Fact board: ProSub 800 has one 8 in radiator and a 20 Hz rating with no tolerance; the DN8 has two radiators, 35 Hz +/- 3 dB, $479 sale vs $599.

Where to buy for less

  • Definitive's outlet. The brand's site has an outlet section that listed the Descend models in October 2026. Sale prices there change often.
  • Best Buy. Best Buy carries home audio and sells open-box items. Check current offers on the PickedBox Best Buy page before you buy.
  • Amazon and Walmart. Marketplace listings vary by seller, so check who ships the item and whether the manufacturer warranty applies. PickedBox keeps offers on its Amazon page.
  • Used ProSub 800. For the lowest cost, a working used unit from a local seller is the cheapest way to get this exact sub.

If you are building a full Definitive system, the guide to the ProMonitor 800 satellite speaker covers the matching speakers.

Who the ProSub 800 suits

A used ProSub 800 makes sense for someone who already owns ProMonitor or ProCinema speakers and wants a matching sub at a low price, or for a small room where a compact 8-inch sub is enough. Anyone who wants a full warranty and a return window is better served by a new Descend DN8 bought from an authorized seller.

How we checked this

In October 2026 (checked Oct 18, 2026), PickedBox reviewed the Definitive Technology subwoofer page, the Descend DN8 page, the brand's return policy and warranty page, and Crutchfield's ProSub 800 page. Used and refurbished prices come from listings seen in search results on Spencertified, eBay and a reseller page, not from purchases. Specifications are the manufacturer's published figures. No subwoofer was bought or used for this article.
