Choosing a perfume without paying full price: samples, decants and sets

Four quick steps to narrow down a perfume

Choosing a perfume is mostly a process of elimination. These four steps cut a long list down to two or three candidates before any money is spent.

1. Pick a scent family. Most fragrances fall into fresh (citrus, green, aquatic), floral, woody or amber and gourmand (vanilla, sweet, spicy). Look at the perfumes you already like and note which family they share.
2. Check the concentration. Eau de toilette is usually lighter than eau de parfum, and parfum or extrait is the strongest. A stronger concentration often costs more per bottle but may need fewer sprays.
3. Test on skin, not on paper. A paper strip shows the opening. Skin shows how the scent settles over several hours, which is what other people actually smell.
4. Wear it for a full day. Notice how long it lasts and whether it still feels right in the evening. A scent that seems perfect in the store can feel heavy by afternoon.

The fourth step is where most money is lost. Buying a full bottle after a ten-minute sniff is the expensive way to learn that a perfume does not suit you. The sections below cover cheaper ways to do that full-day test.

Free samples at Sephora and other stores

The cheapest test is a free one. According to the Sephora coupon page, Sephora lets online shoppers pick two free samples with every order at checkout, with no minimum and no code needed. Fragrance vials are often among the choices, so an order for something else can double as a perfume trial.

In stores, Sephora staff can hand out fragrance samples, but practice varies by location. Posts on the Sephora community forum describe limits of two or three per visit, and some stores say they run out of fragrance vials. Asking at the fragrance counter is the simplest way to find out what a given store offers.

Discount retailers sell samples too. FragranceNet runs a perfume samples section and a monthly scent club that sends travel-size fragrances, which its homepage lists from $6.95 a month in October 2026. A small paid sample costs far less than a bottle that ends up unused.

Sephora sampler sets that include a full-size certificate

Sephora sells perfume sampler sets under its Sephora Favorites name that work like a try-then-buy deal. Each set holds a group of small vials, plus a scent certificate that redeems for one full-size bottle of a featured fragrance at no extra cost.

At the time of checking (October 2026), Sephora's holiday sets looked like this:

Full sizes on the women's list range from 1 oz to 2.5 oz depending on the fragrance. The value depends on which bottle you pick. If the scent you choose normally costs close to $98 on its own, the samples are close to free. If you pick a smaller or cheaper bottle, the set saves less.

Read the terms before buying. Sephora's product pages state that the kit, the certificate and the product received with it are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged. Certificates are redeemed at US Sephora stores or on sephora.com, not at Sephora inside Kohl's or Sephora Canada.

Decants: a cheap way to wear a perfume for weeks

A decant is perfume poured from a full bottle into a small spray vial, often 2 to 10 mL. Decants are sold by resellers, not by the brands. They let you wear a scent for a few weeks instead of a few hours, which is the most honest version of the full-day test.

Two points to know before buying one:

• Price per mL is higher than a full bottle. A decant costs less in total but more per milliliter. It makes sense as a test, not as a long-term way to buy a fragrance.
• Authenticity depends on the seller. Brand founders quoted by Beauty Independent said some buyers received decants that were not the brand's real perfume, and that storage and age are hard to verify. Buy from sellers that state they pour from sealed original bottles, and be wary of listings that call a product a dupe or "inspired by".

Brand-made samples and retailer sampler sets carry less risk, so a decant is most useful for a scent that has no official sample available.

How to pay less for the full bottle

Once a scent has passed the full-day test, timing and store choice matter more than any single coupon.

• Sephora sale events. The Sephora store page lists a Holiday Savings Event that usually runs from late October into early November, with up to 20% off for Beauty Insider members depending on tier, and a spring Savings Event in April. NBC News reported spring 2026 rates of 10% for Insider, 15% for VIB and 20% for Rouge, with VIB at about $350 and Rouge at about $1,000 in yearly spending.
• Beauty Insider basics. Joining is free, and signed-in members get free standard shipping. Members also choose a birthday gift each year.
• Sephora codes. Sephora accepts one promotional or sample code per online order, and many codes exclude some brands. PickedBox lists the current Sephora offers on the Sephora coupon page.
• Discount stores. FragranceNet sells boxed bottles, testers and unboxed bottles at prices below listed retail. On its homepage in October 2026, featured bottles showed discounts from 5% to 53% off retail. See the FragranceNet coupon page for current offers.

Return rules that matter for perfume

Return policies differ a lot, and they decide how much a wrong choice costs.

• Sephora: new or gently used products can be returned within 30 days of purchase with proof of purchase, free in store or by mail with a prepaid label. Items bought at Sephora at Kohl's go back to Kohl's. Sampler sets with certificates are final sale.
• FragranceNet: its returns page accepts unopened merchandise in original packaging within 30 days of receipt, refunded minus shipping charges. An opened bottle cannot go back.

That difference suggests a simple order of operations. Test with a sample, sampler set or decant first. If you are still unsure, buy at a store that accepts gently used returns. Save discount stores with unopened-only policies for scents you already know you like.

Which route fits which shopper

If you want to try many scents at once, a Sephora sampler set gives the most variety, with a full bottle at the end. If you have one specific perfume in mind, a free sample or a decant is cheaper. If you already know your scent and only want the lowest price, a discount store or a Sephora sale event is the place to look, and the coupon pages linked above show what is active.
