Yoga rugs and mats under $60: Ridgeback status and current picks
The Ridgeback yoga rug is still sold on its own website in October 2026, at $89 for the standard size against a $129 list price, so it sits above a $60 budget. Grippy yoga towels from Gaiam and Manduka cost $19.98 to $46 and do a similar job over a mat.

Is the Ridgeback yoga rug still sold
Yes. The Ridgeback Yoga website was taking orders on Oct 18, 2026, and its product listing had been updated the day before. The details at the time of checking:
- Standard rug: $89 in indigo or clean slate, shown against a $129 list price. Both colors were in stock.
- XL rug: $139.99, listed at 28 by 86 inches. Both XL colors were sold out.
- Shipping: the site advertises free priority 2 to 3 day shipping and no sales tax on orders shipped outside Minnesota.
- Returns: a 30-day return window on US orders, with items returned in new condition and with all parts included, according to the refund policy.
Ridgeback is a small Minneapolis company. Founder Kerry Roth works with a family-run weaver in Panipat, India, according to a profile in Mpls.St.Paul Magazine, and the site lists a US patent for the design. The rug is also sold through some studios, and the site runs an instructor discount program.
Yoga rug, yoga towel or a new mat: what each one does
A yoga rug and a yoga towel both lie on top of a mat. Neither replaces the mat's cushioning. The difference is the material:
- Woven cotton rug. The Ridgeback rug is a hand-woven cotton body with raised rubber grip cords and a polyester border, according to its care label. The brand says it has grip tape underneath to stop it shifting, a zip pocket and a grommet for hanging. Cotton feels heavier and more like fabric than a towel. The brand suggests hanging it to dry after each class and machine washing it after about 10 sessions.
- Microfiber towel. Thinner and lighter, it dries fast and is easy to pack. Some have silicone dots or a rubber backing so they stay put, others use corner pockets that hook over the mat.
- A grippier mat. If the problem is slipping on a dry mat rather than sweat, a better mat may help more than a cover. Mats with natural rubber or jute surfaces grip differently from basic PVC foam.
For hot yoga and very sweaty classes, a rug or towel is the usual answer. For a gentle home practice, a decent mat on its own is often enough.
Yoga towels and rugs under $60 in October 2026
These covers lie over a standard mat. Prices are from the brands' own sites on Oct 18, 2026.
| Product | Material and size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Gaiam Stay-Put Yoga Towel | Microfiber, four corner pockets, 26 x 70 in | $19.98 |
| Gaiam Yoga Mat Towel | Microfiber, 24 x 68 in | $19.98 |
| Gaiam Grippy Yoga Mat Towel | Microfiber top, non-slip backing, 24 x 68 in | $34.98 |
| Manduka Equa Hot Yoga Mat Towel | Microfiber, 71 x 24 in | $46 |
| Manduka Yogitoes Hot Yoga Mat Towel | Microfiber, 24 x 71 in | $72 (over budget) |
| Ridgeback rug, standard | Hand-woven cotton with grip ridges | $89 (over budget) |
Gaiam says its Stay-Put and Yoga Mat Towels absorb twice as much as cotton and dry in half the time, and suggests misting the plain towel with water before class to improve grip. Manduka describes the Equa towel as gripping on contact with sweat. These are the makers' descriptions, not test results.
Hand-woven cotton practice rugs, often sold as Mysore rugs, are also listed on Amazon from various sellers. Prices and quality vary by seller and were not checked for this article. Look for stated dimensions that cover a full mat and a clear return policy.

Yoga mats under $60 if the mat is the problem
A rug or towel only helps if the mat underneath is still in good shape. If the mat is thin, flaking or slippery when dry, a new mat may be the better spend. Prices on Oct 18, 2026:
- Gaiam Essentials Yoga Mat, 6mm: $19.98.
- Gaiam Classic Yoga Mat, 4 to 5mm: $21.98 to $24.98 depending on print.
- Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat, 6mm: $34.98 for most prints, $39.98 for reversible designs.
- Gaiam Performance Jute Yoga Mat, 5mm: $39.98. Gaiam says it is made partly from jute, is latex and silicone free, and absorbs moisture, which it pitches for hot yoga.
- Manduka begin, 5mm: $62, just over the budget line.
A jute mat is the closest thing to a woven surface without buying a separate rug. The price gap between a $20 towel and an $89 rug is large, so it is worth deciding first whether sweat or the mat itself is the real problem.

How to pay less on a yoga rug or towel
- Check the Ridgeback sale price against list. The $89 price was already $40 below the $129 list price at the time of checking. There was no sign of how long it would last.
- Ask about studio and instructor pricing. Ridgeback runs an instructor discount program, and studios that stock the rug may have their own prices. The site did not publish the discount amount.
- Watch Gaiam sales. Gaiam's towels and mats are already under $40, and its site runs seasonal sales. The Gaiam store page lists the current Gaiam codes and deals.
- Compare on Amazon with care. Gaiam and Manduka products are also sold on Amazon, where prices move often. The Amazon store page shows current Amazon offers. Check that the seller is the brand or Amazon itself for return handling.
- Buy once, wash often. A towel or rug that is washed regularly lasts longer than one left damp in a bag. Follow the care label, since some say tumble dry low and others say hang or lay flat to dry.
Who the Ridgeback rug is for, and who should buy a towel
The Ridgeback rug suits someone who practices hot yoga often, prefers the feel of woven cotton to microfiber, and does not mind paying $89 for a hand-made piece from a small brand. Its 30-day return window gives some room to try it, as long as it comes back in new condition. For a budget under $60, a grippy microfiber towel from Gaiam at $19.98 to $34.98, or the Manduka Equa at $46, covers the same basic need: a dry, non-slip surface over the mat. For a beginner without a decent mat, the first $20 to $40 is better spent on the mat itself. Anyone with joint pain or an injury should ask a doctor or physical therapist which kind of practice suits them before starting hot yoga.
