Six self-cleaning litter boxes at a glance

The six picks cover the three main designs: a rake that pushes waste into a covered trap in a crystal tray, a rotating sifter that drops clumps into a sealed drawer, and the Litter-Robot globe. Prices were seen on petsafe.com and litter-robot.com on Oct 18, 2026.

The real cost: trays, liners and litter

A self-cleaning box saves daily scooping, but each design has its own refill bill.

  • Crystal tray boxes (ScoopFree Crystal Classic, Crystal Plus): a rake moves waste into a covered trap, and the whole disposable tray is thrown away when it is used up. PetSafe says its Crystal Plus self-cleans for up to 30 days per tray. A 3-pack of fragrance-free ScoopFree trays was listed at $69.99 at Chewy and $73.49 at PetSmart in October 2026 search results, so trays alone can run about $23 to $25 a month if a tray lasts the full 30 days.
  • Clumping boxes (ScoopFree Clumping, SmartSpin, Litter-Robot): they use ordinary clumping litter and a waste drawer. PetSafe says the SmartSpin's 6-liter drawer holds up to two weeks of waste. Whisker sells Litter-Robot drawer liners at $25 for 25 and says the Litter-Robot 4 drawer may need emptying as rarely as once every 8 days.
  • Litter subscriptions: PetSafe's product pages offered 35% off the first litter subscription order, then 5% off every shipment with free shipping.

For a household with two or more cats, the clumping designs usually cost less to run because standard litter is cheaper per week than disposable crystal trays. Count the refill cost for a year before comparing box prices.

Refill facts: ScoopFree tray 3-pack $69.99 at Chewy and $73.49 at PetSmart, about $23 to $25 a month, up to 30 days per tray, Litter-Robot liners $25 for 25.

Under $200: PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic and Crystal Plus

ScoopFree Crystal Classic

The ScoopFree Crystal Classic Self-Cleaning Litter Box was $99.95 on petsafe.com on Oct 18, 2026, marked on sale. It comes with a disposable tray of crystal litter. PetSafe says the crystals absorb moisture and dry out waste, are 99% dust-free, and that safety sensors start the rake only when the cat is not in the box. PetSafe lists it as 20.4 x 7.1 x 28.0 in and suitable for single or multi-cat homes. It runs only on ScoopFree crystal trays, so the tray cost above applies.

ScoopFree Crystal Plus

The ScoopFree Crystal Plus was $199.99. PetSafe says it self-cleans for up to 30 days. A hooded Crystal Pro was $229.99, and an app-connected Crystal Smart was $269.99 to $299.99.

Who it is for: one cat, an owner who would rather throw away a tray every few weeks than handle litter, and a budget under $200 for the box.

Clumping litter: ScoopFree Clumping and SmartSpin

ScoopFree Clumping

The ScoopFree Clumping Self-Cleaning Litter Box was $279.99 on petsafe.com. It works with the cat's existing clumping litter, which helps with cats that refuse crystals.

ScoopFree SmartSpin

The ScoopFree SmartSpin was $399.99, with bundles that add a litter mat, liners and deodorizers at $379.99 to $449.99 depending on the version. PetSafe's specs:

  • Sifts clumps into a sealed 6-liter drawer that holds up to two weeks of waste.
  • Entry 12 in from the ground, for cats up to 25 lb.
  • The PetSafe Pet Companion app tracks weight and visits over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • Works with any litter, with premium clumping litter recommended.

PetSafe's top model, the open-top ScoopFree OpenSky, was $549.99. PetSafe says it fits cats up to 33 lb and has an 8.5-liter drawer that holds up to two weeks of waste for one cat.

Who it is for: multi-cat homes and owners who want app data without paying Litter-Robot prices.

Litter-Robot EVO, 4 and 5: what $599 to $899 buys

Litter-Robot boxes rotate a globe to sift clumps into a drawer in the base. Prices on litter-robot.com on Oct 18, 2026:

  • Litter-Robot EVO, $599: the compact model for one or two cats from 3 to 19 lb. Whisker says the drawer can go up to 7 days between emptying with one cat.
  • Litter-Robot 4, $699: for cats from 3 to 25 lb, with a 15.75 in entry and 16.5 in interior height. The app shows a 7-day view of visits and cat weights.
  • Litter-Robot 5, $799: for up to five cats from 3 to 30 lb, with a feature Whisker calls WasteID that tells urine from stool.
  • Litter-Robot 5 Pro, $899: adds two cameras with streaming and cat recognition.

The Litter-Robot 4 page listed a 90-day in-home trial: if the cat or owner is not satisfied, the robot can be returned for a refund of the purchase price, and the buyer pays return shipping. Every unit includes one year of WhiskerCare coverage, and a 3-year plan is included with most bundles. Shipping was free except to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Whisker also says a Litter-Robot can be paid for with HSA or FSA funds through a partner called Flex, which requires a letter of medical necessity and is not available to everyone.

Who it is for: large cats, homes with three or more cats, and owners who want the longest trial before committing.

Kittens, shy cats and health data

Self-cleaning boxes use weight sensors or motion sensors to wait until the cat leaves. Whisker says kittens under 3 lb are too light to trigger the Litter-Robot sensors and recommends running the unit in a supervised semi-automatic mode until they reach 3 lb. Check the minimum weight for any box before using it with a kitten.

Some cats take time to accept a moving box. Whisker says most cats start using a Litter-Robot within a few days to a week. Keeping the old box nearby for the first days, and running the new one with cleaning switched off at first, are common approaches.

App weight and visit data can show a change, but it is not a diagnosis. A sudden rise or drop in visits, straining, or weight loss is a reason to call a vet.

Not every old pick has gone away. CatGenie, a self-flushing box from the 2020 list, is still sold in two models, the CatGenie Whoosh and the CatGenie A.I. CatGenie's site says both connect to a cold water supply line with a supplied T-adapter and drain into a toilet or a laundry waste pipe. CatGenie did not show prices on its home page when checked.

How to pay less on a self-cleaning litter box

Ways to lower the cost at PetSafe, from the PickedBox PetSafe store page and petsafe.com on Oct 17-18, 2026:

  • Free shipping: orders over $49 ship free by FedEx Ground to the contiguous U.S. Subscription items do not count toward the $49.
  • Litter Autoship: 35% off the first litter Autoship order, then 5% off each shipment with free ground shipping. On a crystal tray box, this is where most of the savings are.
  • Returns: PetSafe accepts returns within 45 days of purchase.
  • Deals page: petsafe.com's Deals page lists current sale items. The Crystal Classic was marked on sale at $99.95 on Oct 18, 2026.
  • Payment: American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

PickedBox lists 2 PetSafe codes and 3 deals on the PetSafe coupon page.

For Litter-Robot, litter-robot.com showed $75 off select bundles on Oct 18, 2026, and the 90-day trial gives more time to decide than PetSafe's 45 days. Buying from another seller moves the return to that seller's policy, Whisker's page says.

For refills, compare the Petco coupon page and the Amazon coupon page. Amazon's Subscribe & Save lowers the price of eligible items on a schedule and saves more when five or more subscriptions arrive on the same day. For a regular box, see the best litter boxes in 2026.

PetSafe ships free over $49, takes returns for 45 days and gives 35% off a first Autoship; Litter-Robot has a 90-day trial and $75 off bundles.
